项目设计灵感来源于本项目的主题--大海。建筑形态寓意一组飘浮在海面上的贝壳，主体建筑的外型来源于海胆的外壳。本工程是在九十年代建成的旧结构上进行改扩建，原有结构在设计时采用的技术规范和施工中采用的技术及材料均不能适应现阶段的技术要求，要在调查分析的基础上对旧结构进行加固改造。因旧建筑无法承担“海胆”的屋盖重量，本工程的屋盖采用了弦支拱桁架与三次双曲抛物面网壳相结合的结构形式，既满足了“海胆”的造型要求，又将“海胆”的重量传至原结构之外的大地上。“海胆”的面层构造刚柔相济。外表面为铝板，能适应高温高湿的气候，抵抗海边盐雾的腐蚀；内表面为张力膜结构，能适应舞台灯光、音响的技术要求。本工程采用了组合变化的泛光照明技术，在不同季节的夜晚，飘浮于海口西海岸的“海胆”将显现梦幻绚烂的色彩。

The project design is inspired by the theme of the project -- sea. The architectural form implies a group of shells floating on the sea, and the exterior of the main building origins from the shell of a sea urchin. The project was to reconstruct and expand the old structure built in 1990s. The old structure needed to be reinforced and reconstructed based on investigation and analysis since the original structure failed to adapt to the technical requirements at current stage in terms of both the technical codes adopted in design and the technologies and materials adopted in construction. As the old structure has been unable to bear the weight of the "sea urchin" roof, the structural form of string supporting arch truss combined with cubic hyperbolic paraboloid reticulated shell adopted as the roof of the project not only meets the exterior requirement of the "sea urchin", but also transfers the weight of the "sea urchin" to the ground outside the original structure. The surface structure of the sea urchin is both firm and flexible. The aluminum plates adopted as the outer surface can adapt to high temperature and high humidity and resist to corrosion from sea salt fog; the tensile membrane structure adopted as the inner surface can meet the technical requirements for stage lighting and sound. Adopting different combinations of floodlight technologies, the "sea urchin" floating on west coast of Haikou will show fantastic colors in the night of different seasons.
